Everything international students need to know about applying for a UK Student Visa in 2025, including documents required, fees, processing time, and the CAS process.

What is the UK Student Visa?

The UK Student Visa (formerly known as the Tier 4 visa) allows international students to study at a licensed UK educational institution. This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know to successfully apply.

Who Needs a Student Visa?

You need a UK Student Visa if you are a citizen of a country outside the UK and want to study in the UK for more than 6 months. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens now also require a Student Visa following Brexit.

Key Requirements

Before applying, ensure you have:

  • A confirmed place (CAS) – Your university must issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies number.
  • English language proficiency – IELTS Academic score of 5.5–7.0 depending on your institution.
  • Financial evidence – Proof you can cover tuition fees and at least £1,334/month (London) or £1,023/month (outside London) in living costs for up to 9 months.
  • Valid passport – Your passport must be valid for the duration of your study.
  • Tuberculosis (TB) test – Required for students from certain countries.
  • The CAS Process

Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is issued by your university once they have confirmed your place. The CAS number is a unique reference that you need for your visa application.

    Visa Fees (2025)

  • Application fee: £363
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776 per year of study
  • Priority service (optional): £250
  • Processing Time

Standard processing typically takes 3 weeks. We strongly recommend applying no earlier than 6 months before your course start date, and giving yourself ample time.
